There are just more annoying ads about PTT, and some sectors do use PTT. There is one major PTT service and handset provider in the US, and that is Nextel (now a part of Sprint).
But for most people doing any kind of instant communication via their phone in the US, it's SMS.

Looking at my handbook(!!) the only reference I see to SMS is an IDrive screen pic under the "BMW Online" section.
Perhaps IDrive SMS is only enabled if you subscribe to BMW Online (not in all territories, of course).
