Ever since I bought my December 03 build car I was looking for information about retrofitting bluetooth. But it was impossible without installing new, and prohibitively expensive new TCU. Few weeks ago, my old TCU failed during a software upgrade, and was replaced by new unit! YES! finally a failure I was happy to hear about. I checked the numbers on it and it looked like it should work - I got it activated today, and yes, it does work!...well.. sort of.... My phone is not in BMW approved phones list - Verizon Samsung A970 and even though it did pair with the car, I pretty much have to punch the button on the phone for it to start connecting - no phone book, nothing else works. Now - when I dial a phone number from my phone - bluetooth works as it supposed to, but when somebody calls me - I can see incoming call on my iDrive, but when I click Accept, it tries to connect for a split second, and then iDrive switches into its default state. I can't hear the caller, caller can't hear me, but the phone itself shows that the call is in progress. Is it the phone? Or the bluetooth? My wife's phone Samsung A950 refused to pair at all. I'm thinking its the phones, but any info on this subject would be most welcome.
Got the AUX input install as well - works great!
This is 99% a phone issue with the A970. It?s consistent with testing I?ve done on other Samsung mobiles.

I've read on this forum that some cell phone service providers restrict their phones when it comes to BT.
This is very out of date info. It was applicable to Verizon wireless a few years ago but they have given up on crippling Bluetooth.
