Sending SMS messages usually takes some setup in your phone, using settings given to you by your cellular provider.

jmcaiado is right!
You can only send SMS using the handset !!!
I was wondering about that too and after searching for it quit a while I RTM again and saw you can do it... So I searched again and found out it's only possible by using the handset. It took me just about one day...

Since we're on the topic of what can't be done, here are a few more bummers I've found with the CPT9000 (BMW branded Motorola V60i):
1) No way to take a "call waiting" and not disconnect the first call.
2) No way to force a pause in a dialing string (try it before contradicting me please!)
3) No horizontal "scrolling" of information that is too wide to fit the screen. (This is a complaint with Nav "information" as well.) If I enter a long number sequence, the recently added digits are off the screen and can't be seen.

My bet is that they don't want people sending SMS via iDrive for the same reason we have an "accept" screen.
It would cause many distractions while driving, I'm sure.
Of course I'm talking about distractions for other people, not the forum members here, right?

There you go! Why not display the SMS messages in the HUD!
Than we could display the map too.
Writing SMS while driving is a big distraction !
That's probably the reason why it's only possible on the handset.
