ringing and recipient message fades in and out when calling

My Ride: 2009 535i
I have an LCI 535i and when I place a call with my bluetooth paired Iphone, the ring sort of fades in and out. If the person does not answer the phone, their outgoing message also fades in and out.
Communication with a person seems relatively normal, but I have this weird instance when I am placing a call.
Has anyone experienced this?
