Yeah that is how it works (that is - the feature is temporary). Good if you are walking out of the car. I use a macro to shut bluetooth off if you want to stay in the car.

Can you tell me how to do Macros? I just got a Motorola Razr and I'd love to be able to shut the BT off with one button when I leave the car to save the battery...its a small battery. TIA

The only way I've found with a RAZR is to transfer it to a bluetooth headset, then the car never takes over the call until you close (turn off) the headset. Works well, only downside is that you need the headset!
