play mp3 files via bluetooth?
#1
Does anyone know if it's possible to play back mp3 files from the phone (mine is a sony K750i, still waiting for the snap-in adaptor...) via bluetooth onto the car audio system?
If so, how do I do it? And if not, why not?

Not yet.
A few phones (the Q) support a bluetooth profile known as A2DP (AADP) - Advanced Audio Distribution Profile. This is the stereo audio profile. Many thought that it would/should not be used over Bluetooth 1.2 bandwidth, but the Q is a 1.2 device and it works just fine. Our cars are 1.2 devices. I tried to pair the phone with my car as a stereo headset. While the car was found, the subsequent scan for profile support revealed that the car did not have an A2DP profile. I think BMW should add the profile. At one point last year, Samsung and BMW jointly announced support for a phone that would integrate with the 5 Series using A2DP. That means it's on someone's radar at BMW.
There is probably a way to hack up a laptop to pipe in audio over a monaural headset profile, but this likely wouldn't sound that good, and would require a cumbersome laptop setup.
