we don't have the 520d here in the US where I am, but someone else will help. You need however, to add your location to your profile, it's very helpful when you have questions.

If you go to the communications menu and do not have an option for "telephone", then your car does not have the bluetooth option fitted. Do you have a mobile phone cradle in the centre armrest? Again, this should be there if you do have the bluetooth option.

Bluetooth is not a standard option on the E60 - even a brand new 2008 model. The navigation can be purchased separately to bluetooth. The "fin" is there no matter what options you get - at the very least it will act as the aereal for your radio.

can i get the bluetooth fitted aftermarket as the steering wheel has got the buttons on it for the phone and it would be nice to get it working
It sure is - search for "bluetooth retrofit" and you'll find plenty of threads about the topic. You have two options/routes, either a dealer install or a DIY install. The former is more expensive of course. But it depends on your electronics / car tinkering skills and confidence.
