Everyone here knows I'm no fan of Apple, so what I'm about to say goes against the general tone of my comments.

This isn't just an Apple thing or an iPhone thing. SMS is poised to be a big headache (as is the security of mobile devices in general) in the coming years.

Apple happens to be the first to have a publicized security issue with SMS, but the SMS attack vector has been on the radar of security practitioners for some time now.

I use to get "!" character in my text messages after I get voicemails. It's weird because I also get the voicemail red indicator after I reboot my iPhone or regain reception. When I call my VM, I have no new messages. This all happened when I had OS 2.X then it stopped from doing it on its own. I had about 12 ghost texts. Still no problems with OS 3.0.1. My iPhone is jailbroken as well.

My phone got a "block" text message yesterday (still had 3.0.0 on it).
I read about the SMS hack a while a go, so i immediately turned on Flightmode and turned off WiFi.
I retrieved a couple of important files and immediately upgraded my phone.

After upgrading i found out the phone actually called several premium phone lines in the minute i hadn't turned on Flightmode yet.
(Cost me about 5 bucks)
I'm lucky i saw the message and reacted fast.

Every one, upgrade your phone, FAST.

(BTW, Apple isn't the only one with this bug! Nokia's are susceptible to much more hacks (SMS, Bluetooth, WiFi and even over 3G!). It's just that this one was published at Blackhat 2009 that it grew out of control.)
