There ARE some issues with 4S and iDrive in the E60 - I know this from experience. The new iPhone has all these behaviors it tries to learn. Like, for example, mine turns on Pandora automatically, whenever I plug it into the Dension. It's very annoying, when I do NOT want to listen to Pandora, because the way you have to do it, is to click on one of the iPod tracks through iDrive, to activate the iPod in the 4S. It also so happens that iDrive would not show track names, until it starts to play from the iPod... when I make/receive calls, BT works only about 30% of the time - most times I'm forced to find a place to pull over to talk, or use the crappy earphone... it's just so annoying that I would need a newer car, simply to make the operation of my in-car phone features work 100% again...
That said, most things are fixable - just have to dig into it and figure it out.

I just bought my first iPhone 3G - it came with those ridiculous little earphones that don't stay in your ears that are only good for listening to music. Having had a Plantronics bluetooth piece for a couple of years (and yes, it still works - not throw-away) I can tell you that going back to those ridiculous little earphones in the car is definitely stepping backward bigtime! Here in my state it is illegal to put the phone to your ear in the car for one thing, not to mention how scarey it is to see the jerk behind me with their phone to their ear with one hand, gesticulating with their other hand between steering corrections and yakking away all the while.
I'll be shopping for a bluetooth ASAP and happily admit to being a bluetooth wanker.

Dig into each contact you have in your Contact list.
Make sure you have both first and last names for each contact. After doing this for every single contact - Restart the phone and remove all previously paired devises before you attempt to pair with the car.
Now pair.
Hopefully it should pair just fine

The BlueTooth profile for the iPhone allows headsets and keyboards to work but not files.
