Lemme see... Does you DVD player manufacturer regularly updates you player software making sure you are getting the best picture? Perhaps your cell phone company is eager to update software in your smartphone? When was the last time you upgraded software in your compact digital camera (DSLR does not count)?

iPod is $249 device like an inexpensive DVD player or cheap camera. There is no reason for Apple to make it upgradeable.

 

Apple writes new firmware updates for the iPod frequently. A few updates per year. There is no reason NOT to give the users this firmware update feature. The only reason is to force us to buy new iPods, because I have already proven there were no hardware limitations. They could have simply allowed us to enjoy this new feature on our existing iPods, and many people would have been very happy. Instead they chose to leave us out. I find this to be dishonest.

Are they allowed to do this? Sure. But I have called them out on it, and so have many other iPod owners with an understanding of these technical features. So it is my choice not to support Apple any longer, and to tell my story to everyone I wish.

 

That would be fully compatible.

Out of the 25 odd phones I tested, all would pair but 2 or 3 did not work at all after pairing.

So even pairing does not mean you will be able to place a phone call - even without phone book transfer.

 

Well, and there is varying richness with regard to functionality between compatible devices. For instance, my Q always paired and transferred phone book entries - from the first day of ownership. Even though it could be regarded as "compatible" with the PBA profile, it wasn't until a firmware update to the phone last summer that it was able to "tag" the numbers meaningfully.

It's not compatible with Microsoft Outlook, by design. Motorola, on the other hand, took pains to make synchronization work with BMW.

 

Non sequitur.

Anyway, many of they sync options with Outlook work today with iTunes (iCal, et al.), why wouldn't it work with iPhone? They both just need to support the RFC for iCalendar. Either way, at this point we can only guess and we'll have to wait two months to know. Even then there could be added functionality that will be added down the road as well.
