I'm guessing that this is covered elsewhere --- however, I ran several searches and couldn't turn up anything.

I would like to store "voice" names to the "Voice Phone Book" in my car, but can not seem to get to the right place to do so. I printed out the "Telephone Users Manual" that I downloaded from this site, and I think I am doing everything correctly, but to no avail.

As described on page 17 of the manual, I have been using the "Save Name" command to store an entry. However, this command is misinterpreted by the car and it either takes me to the Seat Heater Distribution menu or to a Radio Preset menu.

The car understands the "Dial Name" command as it prompts me to say the name that I'd like to dial, but with no names stored, this is not very useful.

Also, FWIW, the "Dial" command works great as I am easily able to speak a phone number to the car and have it dial successfully.

Is there an existing thread that could help me with this one?

I found some addtl info on the board and wanted to update this --- I posted the text below on the Cellphone/Blutetooth thread, but with my additional research, thought thatt some of you may also be interested or able to provide some further insight.... Sorry for the mess

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BACKGROUND: I have an '05 with Nav and a Blackberry 7100g (Cingular) which successfully pairs with the car sans address book. I am not exactly sure what CID I am on, but am guessing 17.1 --- I just had it updated to "the latest version within the past month when a new CCC was installed after the original died --- I have "Perspective" view on Nav.

OBJECTIVE: I want to take advantage of the "Name Dialing" (i.e. "Dial John Smith") functionality of the car.

Yesterday, I downloaded and read the BMW Telephone Users Manual from this site. On page 17, it indicates that you can use the "Save Name" voice command to store a name and number to the car. Once stored, this would enable you to say "Dial NAME" and voilla, that number would automagically be dialed from your phone. According to the manual, up to 50 names/numbers can be stored in the "Voice Phone Book"

Unfortunately, the "Save Name" command is not recognized by my car --- the car reacts by taking me to the Seat Heater Distribution menu . I can use the "Dial number command (i.e. "Dial 215-555-5555") and it works perfectly... I can even use the "Dial Name" command and the car correctly prompts me to enter a name --- however, as there are none stored, there is no acceptable response to this prompt.

Piecing together information gathered from other threads on this site, it seems that the "Save Name" command is not available in cars with Nav. Users with Nav AND a fully integrated BT phone (i.e. one that synchs the Address Book) can use voice dialing to call ANYBODY in their phone's/car's address book... unfortunately, as the Blackberry does not sync the address book with the car, this won't work for me.

Have any of you with NAV AND a BT phone that does not sync the address book (don't know if this applies to anything other than a Blackberry device) been able to get name dialing to work? Is there a workaround to achieve this? I have seen mention on this site of how one can "manually transfer the address book" from their phone to the iDrive on this site --- I have no idea what this is or how to do this, but could this approach serve as a workaround? Or am I simply SOL until Blackberry & BMW come up with an Address Book transfer solution.... any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't have to store any names to use the name dial command. When my phone (V710) pairs with the car my phonebook is loaded...I can use the command Call Home...Then the computer response is "would you like to call home"...You respond with yes...then the number will be dialed.

Glad to hear your experience - I'm going through the same thing! Have NAV and a Pocket PC phone (Audiovox XV6600 on Verizon), posted about it here. I have the same functionality as you - can make and receive calls, no Address book transfer.

When I say "Save Name", I'm taken to some kind of options screen (forgot exactly which one it was, but some remote one that has nothing to do with the phone), so I have no way to store some numbers

While I'm happy to have basic functionality (at least we can use the car as a handsfree headset), it sure would be nice to save just a couple of names so we can voice dial too.

Unfortunately guys this is down to your accents I can only load so many names then it tells me i have already made that entry get someone else to say all the words up to the name then you say it it has to be this way as the car won't recognise the voice when you later ask it to phone that person hope this helps
