SOL I'm afraid. You'll need the newer TCU.
Sigh. Sheet that sucks.

As the man said, correctamundo. The good news is the price has come way down to about $600 to $700 for the newer TCU. Originally (back in 2005) they were over $2000. You will need several hours of labor to code the TCU to the car and then software update or installation (depending on your current version) to get it working.

Refer to Item 4.

I just had my TCU replaced (under warranty) *but* the dealership claims that since my car was produced in 02/04, it doesn't have the required hardware and so bluetooth will *not* be available even after a software upgrade.

Any ideas?

On the proviso that the TCU is the latest version, show them point 4 in the service bulletin regarding BT Compatibility. The TCU is the only piece of hardware that you need to worry about.

Then tell them to get with the program. It's only been 3 years since these issues were worked out.

I wonder if, to save money, BMW refurbished some of the older TCUs that were replaced with newer ones and now they're installing them on the older cars that were built before 3/2004?

I suppose it's a long shot but it's clearly a possibility...

Rudy is right, likely a rebuilt TCU was installed. In a similar situation, my M-ASK unit which operates the radio and CD player died. It was replaced by my dealer with a rebuilt unit. I hoped to get a new unit and get MP3 capability but no such luck...

I never thought of that but it is a possibility that rebuilt units were being sent out by Motorola. I suppose one could track the part number and determine when that part was released by BMW.

You can go to realoem.com and check. That's what I did for my M-ASK unit and indeed BMW had a part number for rebuilt/refurbished M-ASK units. The argument I got from BMW was that they replace with a unit of the same capability that your car had. I suppose if I had realized this I could have asked for a newer M-ASK unit, offering to pay the difference but never got that option...

I suppose I need to physically look at the TCU and check what the part number is... unfortunately, my family will be on vacation for a week so I won't get to look until after I get back from vacation (orlando).

Yes, or the part number should be on the work order. Here is the link for the remanufactured TCU from realoem.com...
