Now I thought I was a bit of an expert on BMW Bluetooth, but ......
I have a 530D made / registered in November 03. It was equipped with bluetooth from new.
My question is this .... what phones are compatible? Now before you all get too excited and send me off to www.bmw.co.uk/bluetooth or wherever let me explain that it gets a bit more complicated.
Each phone has a comment like this ... "Compatible with the 6 Series, 5 Series, the new 3 Series Saloon and Touring, 1 Series, 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, the X5, X3 and Z4 from March 2005 production onwards."
Does the phrase "from March 2005" apply just to the X5, X3 and Z4, or to the whole list? If so, then there are no phones listed as being compatible AT ALL!
I have spoken to customer services at BMW UK who were incredibly helpful and said that regardless of production date the car could easily have a flash upgrade in an hour or so and then it would work with any compatible phone. Sounds good, but were they right? It's the first time I've heard that it was so easy. Answers on a postcard please (or here if you prefer), but remember I'm talking about an E60 manufactured in Nov 03! Many thanks. James

The dealer is correct - you can get software upgrades to make it compatible with any of the listed phones. However, this has a habit of taking more than an hour or so! Sometimes it can take overnight depending on what they intend to upgrade.
As for compatible phones - the best all rounder which has a snap in adaptor etc is the Nokia 6230i in my opinion. There are phones which have more features and which do work like the SE K750i for example, but I prefer the simplicity of the Nokia menu system etc.
I am from the UK too - USA models may differ.

James,
I have a Nov '03 build 530i, the first thing I'd say is ignore official BMW info - it's usually out of date and overly specific.
Personally this list http://www.x5world.com/html.php?file=bmw_bt_phones.htm, is the one I trust, is up to date, and it doesn't apply only to the X5.
I've had a Motorola V600 and now use a V635 with no real problems. Unlike the 6230i, it also has an external antennae connection - and so uses the cradle to connect to the external shark fin antennae - and there is a noticeable increase in the call quality and reception from that.
My car has an old CIP version also, around 12 or 13 I think, and as mentioned a CIP upgrade takes more like 6-8 hours or longer if problems.

The 6230i also connects to the shark fin via the cradle - it's just that it's not a hard wire connection!
