Any Linux gurus out there who care to test this out?

It mentions a major German auto manufacturer but I think our cars have the ability to enter a (non-default) passcode. Maybe this worked on the E39 or other models with BT?

 

As long as there is no default passkey, and your car is in motion, I do not think there is much to worry about..

And, when I pair my phones I can freely choose four-digit passkey.

 

That's what I thought with regard to the E60 but what about earlier models? Anyone with a Linux BT laptop looking to have some fun?

 

I dont know if its true but I'll throw this out... for the E60 isnt there only 1 screeen inside the BT section where it will allow conncetion to another device? So while driving its not in the "Bluetooth is connectable in this screen" so no one can inject any voices to your speakers...

 

EMMCS03: Well pointed out. The carkit device is invisible unless you're in the BT menu.

 

Right, but am I the only one who thinks it would be fun to taunt other cars (older BMW's, Acuras, etc.) that have BT but no user interface?

 

It could be fun though.. sneaking up on someone on the highway, then taking control over their speakers..

 

Oh you're talking about fun... I thought you were bringing up a concern. LOL Ya it would be fun as long as it wasnt done to me.

Plus... wont be fun when they start injecting viruses to the car via BT
