If your 2004 car was produced on or after 3/2004, then a software upgrade will enable bluetooth. If the car was produced prior to that date, a new TCU (telematics control unit) will be needed (which costs over $1000, I think.)

Do a search, there is a BMW memo on the issue that was posted here stating this. As someone with a car produced before March 2004, I followed this issue with interest and decided BT was not worth the $1,200 to replace the TCU...

Here it is...

Thanks kscarrol - my car falls into the grey area...

For E60/63/64 vehicles produced from 3/04 to 8/04, Bluetooth functionality can be added to most of these
vehicles by updating the vehicle software using CIP 13.2 or higher.

My dealer already told me they couldn't do it so I guess I am not one of the "most" Maybe I will try another dealer.

If your car is a week 30 '04 production (as per your sig) you will be able to have BT activated with a software modification for certain. You will have to pay for the programming only. There should be no need for any further hardware. You will not be able to have a phone cradle installed in your car however.

Had it activated in my '04 - June production. Dealer did not charge me and it is working great.
