Is there a way to turn BT off if you do not want use it, if lets say you have other people in the car and you want switch to the phone itself for privacy reasons?

There is, but unfortunately on most phones I have seen its not that easy. I have tried using short cuts on my V3. Basically you have to highlight the connection to the car on your phone and then say "drop connection".

You can either drop connection from your phone... as per last post this varies in difficulty from phone to phone, on the Nokia 6310i is is easy to do... just press options while call is in progress and then OK. Alternatively you can turn BT off in the i drive menu. Press controller down and select Comms interface and un check the BT box.

This is an option but not really viable. The phone will then prompt you that the BT signal is weak or lost and if you wish to switch to the handset. All this is just too inconvenient to do on the fly.

It's pretty easy on my Motorola V600, all I do is pick up the phone and switch the headset option to off...

On my SE T637 I just pres the joystick and I get a "transfer sound", I select that and it gives me a choice of phone or other BT devices I have created, like my JABRA BT Headphone
