BMW's Phone Cradle
#1
My Nokia 6310i has now done 3 years service with me but is about to rollover and die So, it's now time to get a new phone!
I called the BMW Dealer and asked what snap in cradles I can get for my E61 - and I was somewhat surprised to learn that if I want to stay with a Nokia then it's another 6310i! This isn't good news as they don't make them anymore!
Does anyone know (or have a list) of any third party suppliers that I can do these brackets/snap ins?
Cheers,
WDTBD

Your dealer is an idiot.
I have a 6230i, widely considered as the replacement for the 6310i as a general use business phone.
A perfectly good snap fit adapter is available from BMW - but unfortunately is about ?60. To the best of my knowledge there are no 3rd party vendors.

Is BMW keeping up with these or should we always have the previous model of Nokia?

Indeed, but I, for example, just upgraded to what's considered replacement for 6230i, meaning 6280. In June will appear also another replacement 6233.

For the past 5 years or so the 6310i has been the most common business tool in the UK.
Now it's the 6230i. Doesn't mean it's the most up to date model or best - it's just the one the network providers buy in bulk for their business customers. They kept the 6310's going much longer than necessary by stockpiling used ones for spare parts....
Problem with these snap fits is that BMW don't seem particularly focused on making them generally ... they just seem to want to provide one or 2 'best selling' phone options... I guess it's a relatively small market / part of the business for them.

No I think it's more simple - it is a crap piece of design. Good design would have addressed the issue from the point of view that there are a wide variety of mobiles and the rate of change is high. So the objective should have been to provide some sort of universal connector for both the antenna and a charging source which a user could then attach (with appropriate minor surgery) to the cables provided by the phone manufacturers.

Yeah - I've just turned down a Nokia 8800 because I'll lose the functionality that I currently have with my 6230i - but as someone just said, even the 6230i is old now - so what's next BMW ?

I've just swapped from a 6310i to a 6230i. The cradle insert for the 6230i was actually less than I expected - IIRC around ?54 (I seem to recall the 6310i cradle was over ?60).
In practice I only use the cradle on long trips where I want to ensure the phone is fully charged - it usually just remains in my pocket/jacket/briefcase etc. There appears to be little benefit in dropping it in the cradle other than to charge it.
