Making a hands-free calls in a car by accessing a phone book or SIM card in a handset via Bluetooth is "one of the major features" for consumers, said Peter Schramm, leader of communications systems at BMW. And yet, the phonebook access functionality is still not supported in the current version of Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile.

My Ride: May 2004 525 Amethyst grey, Heated front seats, bluetooth prep, Adaptive Xenons, 6 CD changer, Front & Rear PDC, retro-fit 6 DVD changer in boot (trunk) with remote control plus headrest screens and IR headphones, Playstation connection to cabin, twin 12v outlets in rear cabin
Maybe I'm lucky, or it's just that I have an old cell phone (Nokia 6310i) but Bluetooth works fine for me in my May 2004 525. (On occasion I even get the - seperate - voice input to work)
Having the phone SIM phone book entries available on the centre monitor is great, but just having the phone automatically switch over to hands free as soon as it is in the car is also a 'killer application'.

Agreed, but it works...
Whatever, it's BMW that need to sort this lot out.

Yeah but the new phones aren't exactly behaving like older ones. Bottom line is Bluetooth SIG needs to come up with a conformance suite that both the headset/car kit and phone mfrs should abide to. Without this it will always be a finger pointing scenario.
