I installed a new Bluetooth enabled TCU in my car and took to the dealer for programming.
My dealer refused saying the software retrofit was likely to damage my car. After talking to the service manager, he said they would do it, but it would cost at least 6.5 hours of labor. This seems like way too much labor in my opinion, especially saying I have installed the TCU already.
How much have others had to pay to have the retrofit done?

that is BS.. I got the labor done for 1.5 hours. You can try another dealership if anything. I'm pretty cool with my SA and the service tech guy at BMW so that might be why. They see me too often. LOL.

That is what I thought. They gave me the BS that all 2004s have this problem.

I'm getting my TCU replaced under warranty next Tuesday on a 2006 550i, when I scheduled the appointment I was planning on waiting. The SA called me back saying they will need the car all day long for the reprogramming. Just an FYI.

Yeah, dealers usually like to have the car for the day when updating software. From what I understand, it can take multiple attempts to load for a successful upgrade.

My Ride: Stock for now
I just bought a 2004 E60 with a build date of 05/04. Based on all the info I got from you guys on this forum I looked looked at my TCU unit and found it has one with a date of 06/2006 but the car is an 04. The car was a leaser return when I bought it. I tried to get the bluetooth into a pairing mode but it does not show up on the I-Drive nor do the steering wheel buttons activate. I took it to the dealer to see if I could get the bluetooth activated. The service writer called the tech and he said he is not sure why its turned off especially seeing the date and the passkey code on the TCU. They told me to bring it back next week and they would check the software and update it. Was told it would cost $160 for the update. I will let you know how it works out!

Hey guys I too have the bluetooth option in Idrive however I too cannot pair a phone or do anything with it because its one of the 2004 models. Do I need to completely replace the TCU or is it something that can be programmed by the dealer?

I'll let you know next week about mine. But from what I read here if your build date is after 03/04 you should be able to get it the software updated from the dealer but you will have to pay for the labor. If not you will need a newer TCU and then the software updated. Check the date on your TCU to find out. It has a label on it with the date.
