My car is from 05/2003.

My eq. list says:
"640 CAR TELEPHONE PREPARATION "

I have the mics and everything, but what else do I need?

Depending on what I need, is it possible to install this myself? (exept the coding at BMW)
In this BT enable discussion it is VERY important to know if the car is for USA or for European market. I have noticed that US models from 03/04 to 8/04 can be done very easily, but not European ones. I have 03/04, with CIP 28 or something and BT is enabled. But it is not and probable will not be working because we have the different phone setup. Mine has that Motorola CPT 9000 or something which is not a GSM phone itself at all, only a BT handset. Difficult and frustrating...

my service department was stunned when i showed this to them. the teck even got on the phone and read the memo and i had to point out line 4. after about a day they called back and said they would try but it might not take, either way they would charge two hours of labor. I think they should do it and if it does not take not charge me because i had to tell them how to do it. but we'll see

Where is the mic actually located? behind the driver sun visor? my 530i has a build date 07/04 and I'm in the US so hopefully I should be good. I just don't want 2 pay the dealer & not have the bluetooth. And how good is the bluetooth? people who have used it, does it work well?

The mic is in the cluster by the sunroof controls, between the sunroof button and the ASSIST switch IIRC.

With your build date it should be a simple software enablement. I use it daily. The sound quality is not perfect but it is quite acceptable and the fully handsfree system is the selling point for me.

I have a 9/03 production date E60. It has a newer production date TCU and the dealer did the retrofit procedure for it no problem. Voice recognition works as well. Total cost was $112 including tax. As for the UK spec 2/04 E60, I do not think you will need to upgrade your TCU, but you may need to install the ULF and Mic for sure. Just do a search and you will find many threads and posts that deal with this exact thing.

I also have a 09/03 530. The TCU was replaced last year under warranty due to malfuntion. the new TCU has the Bluetooth sign on it (I open the panel and checked) but my SA told me that Bluetooth could not be retrofitted in my model ?! I think I have the mic because I could speak with the BMW concierge by hitting the ASSIST button on the top cluster. What could be the reason for my model not being able to be retro-fitted with BT?

Is there something I can check on the TCU. I have feeling the SA and the foreman is bu***sh** me but I need some more info to take this up..my car is in the shop for some other work and I would like to get the BT done is possible..

Any inputs?

Hi, Please help !

I have a "new" 535d from production 07.12.2004

It has the following options;

0605 - Telematik preperation
0607 - Teleservice preperation
0612 - BMW Assist
0620 - Voice control
0638 - Phone proffesional
Navi proff

I can even pair my phone (blackberry Bold) with the bluetooth of the car, but it does nothing afterwards.

Dealer says; "The bluetooth is in the car just for the horn of the proffesional phone" (which has an own simcard)

If you want normal bluetooth, you need a new module, and cabels, and 5,5 hour work.
= +- 1100 euro's...

What are my possibilities, before I order a Parrot ??

Thanks in advance !!

Greetings form Holland..!

They told me the same thing intially. About a month later I showed up with a copy of the bluetooth service bulletin and specifically highlighted the paragraph following #4 on the first page. It clearly states that builds from 03/2004 to 08/2004 can have the bluetooth feature retrofitted via software. It also states that it is at the owner's expense. They charged me $125 plus taxes (1 hour labour) to complete the retrofit. I am located in toronto, canada. The cost should be the same anywhere else as well. As stated before, the only thing I noticed was it seemed to echo with the phone in the center console. I put mine in the trunk on the left rear side of the car and also plugged in the 12 volt adapter in the trunk. (bluetooth enabled on my cell. drains the phone battery much quicker) The telecommunications unit is located in the left rear of the trunk. I'm assuming the echoing stopped since the signal strength is much stronger back there. After your first call using bluetooth your phone book from your cell is automatically loaded into i-drive. There isn't really a need to have your cell phone with you in the front. You can do most things through i-drive.

Grab a copy of the service bulletin from my original post and bring it to your dealer. They can't deny their own bulletin.
Henny, just come across this posting. Would you mind to share which dealership you had this done in Toronto?
I asked Budd's in Oakville and they quoted me 3-6 hours of labor time.

Thanks in advance.

If anyone out there has a 2004 5 series with a build date of 03/04 to o8/04 you can most likely get the bluetooth function retrofitted via software for about an hour of shop labour. I just recently had my dealer do the retrofit. The shop guru didn't seem convinced it was possible until I showed him one of their tsb's. He then called bmw (engineering department?) who responded that the retrofit may work but issues with the operation of the system could arise. Needless to say, the sevice advisor told me they could try the retrofit for an hour's shop time but if it didn't work they would need to charge an additional hour's labour to return the software to the original state. I went ahead and had it retrofitted. When I got the car I paired it to my older razor and the system seems to work great. The only issue I had was it seemed to echo during calls until I placed the phone in the trunk near the tcu. Now it works great. Voice recognition also works. Well worth the hour shop labour.

See step 4 on the first page.

I have an 2004 and had the same echo problem and in 2005 BMW NA replaced my
2004 TCU with a 2005 and it did correct the echo and everything is working ok, but I am now having a volume level issue.

It's true what the dealer says. I had that option in my first E61, it's actually a more expensive option than the bluetooth phone. But that doesn't help you... I had a twin SIM card in my phone and then I put my phone into flightmode when I wanted the calls to be transfered to the car, a bit of a hazle though..
