Hi, I'm new to this group - I just bought a 2005 BMW 545 (yesterday!) and I love it so far.

I'm a little confused as to whether this car supports bluetooth or not. One dealer's parts dept said the 2005 bmw 545 does not support bluetooth and another dealer's parts dept said it does.

Can someone let me know what I need to do in order to get a phone working in this car with all the nice hands free functionality?

Thanks very much for your help!

All 2005 BMW 5-series have Bluetooth.

To get phone working:

1. Buy a bluetooth enabled phone. NOT A PDA device, like an iPaq or Blackberry.

2. Get in car and start it.

3. Turn on cell phone.

4. Use iDrive to enter Information Menu, then Communication Settings. Once there, goto Phone Settings, Bluetooth. The screen will say "Bluetooth connectible in this menu"

5. Go into the cell phone settings and turn on bluetooth. Start the bluetooth discovery mode on the phone. The phone will find the BMW, and ask you to enter a passcode. Choose any passcode you want and enter it into the phone.

6. Once entered, the car will ask for the passcode. Enter the code with the iDrive and you'll be done.

7. To use phone, goto communication menu. Or, use voice dialing.

That X5 world list is not 100% correct.

Blackberry 7100 does NOT work.
iPaq does not work either, at least... it's essentially useless.

From the Blackberry site:
Connection problems between BlackBerry handhelds and Motorola Bluetooth car kits in 2005 BMW models
Last Modified: 24 January 2005
Article Number: KB-03691

Summary
This article applies to the following:

BlackBerry? Handheld Software versions 3.8 and 4.0
BlackBerry 7100 series
BlackBerry 7290, 7250, and 7520 Wireless Handhelds?
Bluetooth?
Motorola Bluetooth-enabled car kit for BMW 2005 Sedan
SDR42542

Description
When attempting to connect the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld to the Motorola Bluetooth-enabled car kit (factory installed with the BMW 2005 Sedan), the handheld cannot maintain a stable connection using auto-discovery or the Connect command on the handheld. The handheld is able to pair with the car kit, but it only manages to connect briefly before losing the connection.

Implementation issues/differences with the Bluetooth car kit prevent it from functioning properly with Bluetooth-enabled BlackBerry handhelds.

Thanks everyone for the help - I bought a Motorola Razr and it works with the 2005 545 bluetooth. One question: how do I receive SMS text messages in the car? Does that work? (I received a text message on my phone but it did not show up in the car)

Thanks!
