why is not good for our cars? Cold Air intakes?
|
Because the engineers at BMW know how to make good airboxes. That's really all there is to it...most CAI's heat soak.

The Afe intake LOST hp... lol Wow!!! :bash: I wish I would have known that before I installed an AFE. I have had one installed for about a year and half (4000 miles). I have not had it dyno'd, but it sure feels like it has more acceleration. It has a great sound when you put your foot in it. I went with the dry filter option due to the reported MAF sensor issues. This is what AFE sent me before I ordered: BMW 6 Series E60 650i aFe Intake Kit (Stage II) Part number: 54-11142 Application: E63/64 2006-2008 650i Description: aFe Magnum FORCE Stage 2 Cold Air Intake System for 550i and 650i (E60/E63). 11.75 hp and 10.50 lb/ft torque gain! This intake kit replaces your restrictive factory air box. It features a 3-angle velocity stack adapter, heat-block molded intake tube, 16-gauge powder-coated steel heat shield, trim sealed to seal out hot engine air, and a custom aFe brand cotton filter. By removing your stock intake air box, you are removing the most restrictive portion of your V8's intake system, increasing both horse power and torque, improving acceleration as well as throttle response. 11.75 hp gain at 5900 rpm 10.50 lb/ft torque at 4000rpm |
This is how aFe gets their numbers: they run it on the dyno once...when the engine bay is nice and cold...with the hood open. After one or
two runs, the engine bay gets heat soaked and you loose HP. |

There is a 4 to 41/2 inch hose that ports to the front of the car to pull in cool air into the OEM air filter box. It ports to the driver side grill. When I installed my AFE, I left that Hose in place. It pushs cool air from outside the engine bay directly onto the AFE filter. This should reduce/minimize the "heat soaking" issue at cruising speed. With that said -- you are correct that the OEM box pulls all of its air from outside the engine bay. I am not an expert on this topic, but the OEM box has to be more restrictive than a AFE or cone shaped filter. |

The 2008 650i has a hose that runs from the OEM box to the front of the vehicle. Do you add the RP scoops in addition to the OEM hose? |
