Sat in a 6 series today at dealers and noticed it was very similar to 5 series inside. Happened to notice a temp gauge where we have economy meter or whatever its called. Why is the engine temp so important in a 6 seriesI didn't see whether it was a 630 or 645 but so what.

Anyone know why?

I noticed that a few months back. Asked my salesman and he had no idea either.

I guess having temperature gauge is more sporty than a economy meter. Especially since the 6 Series is supposed to be more sporty than a 5 Series.

Perhaps because 4.5 litre V8 and economy are a contradiction!

The M5 & M6 also replace the (useless) MPG gauge with a temp gauge. I can't belive my 545i doesn't have a temp gauge.

We must know our oil temp before we run down any 535d or 545i. Just would not be good if we did it with cold oil

I tell you what I want......and OIL temp gauge like is in the M3. The water temp guages will basically tell you when your heater will work....an oil temp gauge tells you when the car is ready to be run hard.

Agreed. My previous cars only had three real locations the needle ever visited on the temp gauge - cold, operating temp, and "uh oh". Hardly useful.

An oil temperature gage is an absolute must in any high performance car. You don't want to really stress the engine until the oil temperature reaches operating level. The 'economy meter' is idiotic. It's nothing more than a vacuum gage.

I rely on the white hash marks (that disappear as the car warms up) along the outside edge of the tach to give me the same info I would get from a temp gauge (i.e., to know when i can push the engine harder)...so i don't miss the temp gauge at all...

It doesn't give you the same info. You have no idea what the oil temperature is, or if it's running hot.
