So on bimmerfest someone was talking that they put the paddleshifters in their 645 by replacing the steering wheel with the M6 one. anyone have experience with this?

Thanks Doc Horror for presenting such nice mods

SMG steering wheel on a Steptronic

Doc Horror 11-17-2008 12:48 PM

It has been a while I did that mod, but still like it. Especially in curvy roads, shifting in corners without taking the hands of the wheel is just pleasure

tbal 11-17-2008 01:15 PM

That is so awesome man, DIY! lol

Phatisfy 11-17-2008 03:46 PM

I would also like to know more info about this because I've been thinking about paddal shifters for awhile now.

Lucardes 11-17-2008 04:32 PM

There's also someone who put those shifters and and SMG shifter in an auto transmission 645ci and made it work! Not sure who it was....someone in the bimmerfest forum

2modfast 11-17-2008 04:37 PM

That sure is a sweet mod :)

ok guys.. I think this is a pretty cool mod but there is no DIY for the 6. I'll volunteer to tinker on my ride once again to provide a DIY to the community like I did with the iPod interface. I can get the paddle steering wheel from BMW at wholesale price. The idea is that everyone donates a little towards the DIY so I can post it. If we can't get the $ together everything will be refunded respectively. I set up a paypal account @ "paddleshiftproject@hotmail.com" for this purpose.

What does everyone think?

DIY for the sixer is the same as for the fiver, there is no difficulty if you have the steering wheel and Fred's kit. Fred's kit comes with a clear DIY, it is easy! It si actually in the sixer easier to hide the cable which goes to the gearlever.
So, save your money and just do it. You'll love it......

schulrog 11-18-2008 10:02 AM

i do get it and i have a vague idea on how to do it.

Where is this fred and how much is the kit?

Doc Horror 11-18-2008 12:34 PM

Fred = my530i

You should ask or PM him for a price

BTW: I was not implying you as not getting it, but that was a reply on Lucardes

schulrog 11-18-2008 01:02 PM

NP:) i didn't take any offense to it :)

Doc I was talking about the SMG shifter not the wheel :) were both talking about something different. Because you can have paddle shifters without the SMG shifter to work with your auto shifter. But I saw someone in Bimmerfest forums that did it so he has his steering wheel paddles to work and also swapped his auto shifter with SMG and got them to work. The trick is to have it on sport mode and in steptronic mode to get the paddles to work.

Hello guys, I am trying to do this exact conversion but can't seem to get my hands on the proper information.

There are a couple of guys selling the harness or kit to use along with SMG or SSG enabled steering wheels but no one who can confirm it will work with my 645 ci.

I have a 05/2004 645ci (E64) with automatic (steptronic) transmission.

2 questions:

Where can I get the kit
where can I get the steering wheel

I know I can change my airbag from my existing one. this guy seems to be selling the steering wheel but he says it won't fit my model.

See this link for detail: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-5-ser-...#ht_1966wt_989

I would appreciate your comment/response

Regards

A

As you can read in my write-up, I got the kit from my530i (=forum member).
First of all you need to get the proper steering wheel. I got mine from ebay. You can get also one at the dealer at significant costs. Not all steering wheels will fit though.
I think Fred (my530i) can tell you exactly what to look for.
Once you get the steering wheel, the rest is pretty straight forward. You will get the description on 'how to' with the kit.

Good luck!

bretsinclair 09-19-2011 11:59 AM

Hi,

There is a guy in the US that allows for a steering wheel change on a 645.
