And you wonder why someone would love that engine in a 6er? Either you hate that engine, either I miss something. I personally would not buy a 635d, but I know a lot of guys who would. So what gives?
However - like yourself - I would not buy a 635d. Not when there's a 650i available, and probably a 635i soon. Why would anyone - who is seriously in the market for a 6-series - want to buy it? I can believe (just) the economy argument for a 5 series, but not for a 6. It's not that kind of car.
It will be less balanced (front heavy), less nice sounding, less fun to drive, and slower in any way except in-gear pickup. And even that advantage may be smaller than one thinks, if the petrol TT works as it's supposed to; absolute torque does not matter, once you factor in gearing. All that counts is flatness (or peakiness) of the torque curve.

There are guys, who don't want a 4 doors saloon, but still they want to drive a lot without pressure of the gas prices. Diesel is not only about economy.
Either it is about economy, or it is not. If they don't want financial pressure, I could suggest many many cars that are much cheaper than a 6-series. If one likes the particularly relaxed driving style that a Diesel engine can allow (particularly the BMW TT), then why buy something like a 6-series?

Thats a lie, the 535d and 550i weights exactly the same. Then it would be the same for 635d and 650i.

Good point. Then the 650 is going to be relatively front heavy too (BTW - we are talking ~50kg F-R shift). Which if I'm not incorrect was pointed out by several motoring magazines when testing 630 and 645... All the more reason to wait for a 635i...
ot. Last weekend I had a Alpine White 320si as a loaner from my dealer. That car is amazing. It's not the fastest car made in a straight lane, but in the turns it feels as good as a E46 M3. And it might save your license, and you will still have very fun.. The last 500 revs up to 7-thousand-something sounded AMAZING...
