Son Buys Same BMW E34 5 Series His Dad Owned 16 Years Ago

5 Series

I’m gonna be like you, dad. You know I’m gonna be like you.

The cars we grow up with leave an indelible mark on us. The memories we form in those first cars are powerful. Recognizing your parents car as you got picked up from school, or out with friends was a familiar and comforting feeling. Or seeing your dad or mom for the first time as people, not just parents, as they were behind the wheel, cool and in command. Seeing dad take pride in his car, washing and waxing it with care. Weekend drives, family vacations,  grocery shopping, borrowing the car the first time…our cars become a part of the family and of some powerful memories. And while the cars may be traded in, we always keep a soft spot for those first rides, those first cars that often start a life-long love affair. Such was the case of this week’s “Cool Car Stories” post about a young man who purchased a BMW E34 almost identical to one that his father owned 16 years ago.

We found this cool story on Reddit a while back and the tale seems timeless, but unfortunately, the poster didn’t leave many details other than the split-screen image of the man as a little kid in front of dad’s car, and then 16 years later, with his own BMW. It appears the car that both father and son bought was an early 1990s European BMW E34 5 Series. There are a few minor differences (we actually prefer dad’s tires) but we think the son nailed it. It’s a clever and lovely way to revisit the past, and give a nice tribute to his dad, and the great 5 Series he drove.

And speaking of revisiting the past, to show our appreciation for this awesome display of dedication, we dedicate a cover gem from the ’90s to this Redditor!
