BMW is voluntarily recalling diesel BMW X5s manufactured between June 13, 2009 and November 13, 2009.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,540 SUVs are affected by this recall. NHTSA says the issue originates with the X5’s fuel filter heater:

“The fuel filter heater, which is used for warming up the diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low outside temperatures, could experience an electrical overload condition and become permanently activated.”

BMW says a fuel filter heater that remains on could drain the vehicle’s battery. In the unlikely worst-case scenario, the device could overheat and cause a fire.

Similar issues have been reported in 22 cases, but none has been reported within the United States. There have been no reports of mishaps or calamities corresponding to this recall.

If you own an affected 2009 – 2010 BMW X5 diesel, call BMW at 1-800-525-7417, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. More information can be found at SaferCar.gov.
