You might’ve never have guessed it, but running a 27 mile long race track year round is an expensive proposition. And so, it seems the the Nurburgring’s fiscal problems have caught up with it and the track is officially up for sale. Apart from being the one of the most famous racing venues in the world, it’s also a valuable test-bed for car tuning. Depending on who buys the track, those days could be over.

A lot of things could be over, as the Grand Prix circuit is also up for grabs. So are the museum and the Nurburgrollercoaster. Nurburgring bloggers, Bride To Gantry, worry that new owners of the course might shut down grass roots motorsport, jack up prices, and make the course private. Potentially it could also mean the end of Nurburgring spy photography, should the ring’s new owners deem it so.

It’s not like there are any shortage of race tracks in Germany, but the Nurburgring is easily the most recognizable and internationally appreciated auto circuit in the world. Hopefully, under new ownership, the hot, sweeping curves of the green hell won’t freeze over.

Just in case the Nurburgring slips into inaccessibility, let’s remember some of the good times that BMWs have had there.
