We Think it’s Even Quicker Than They Say

Starting at $58,500, the BMW M440i xDrive gets revamped turbocharging to improve fuel efficiency and turbine response. It’s good for a 4.6 second 0-60 mph dash with a speed limited 155 mph top end. It sips 34.5 mpg according to European data.

We think it will be even quicker though, if our impressions and our recent test of the M340i xDrive are anything to go by. It’s backed by the choice of the $45,600 255 hp 295 lb.-ft 5.5 second 0-60 mph 133 mph 34 mpg 1998cc four-cylinder turbo petrol 430i Coupé. It comes in rear wheel drive but there’s also a $47,600 AWD 430i Coupé that’s two-tenths quicker to 60 and an mpg heavier on gas.

There’s a Little Hybrid Bonus Too

The M440i xDrive benefits a bonus 11 hp 48-volt starter-generator mild hybrid system. To boost the combustion engine for even sharper response and optimal efficiency. The optional eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission gets a new Sprint function to instantaneously select a more dynamic temper.

M Sport spec is standard on the M440i and optional on the lower models. M Sport Pro adds Sport transmission, 19-inch M light-alloys and a ‘sporty interior soundtrack’. You can also tick Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport brakes and a fully variable lockable M Sport differential boxes when you spec your Four.

Stiffer, and Tauter with Better Aero, Too

Stiffer and weight-optimized, the new 4 Series Coupé benefits a 0.8-inch lower center of gravity and 0.9-inch broader rear axle track than the latest 3 Series for 50:50 weight distribution. Optimized aerodynamics reduce rear axle lift. New 4 gets bespoke tuned lift-related damper suspension with an even firmer optional M Sport option.
