Default No AC!?

Not very knowleable with cars especially with AC's, so mind the possible stupid question.

My 2010 E61 520D AC compressor wont ?engage? (spin) even with AC on full blast. No pressure in the system either. Compressor isnt locked up or anything.

Question goes, should I just replace the compressor, and hope that it was the issue? Fill up the system? something else?

Looking to save money, so if compressor is the likely culprit, then I'll just replace it. But seeing that there was no preassure in the system, could there just be a leak, and the compressor turned off with no preassure. Filling it up is expensive so doing so just try out doesnt seem like a good idea.

Any help is appreciated!!

The Compresor does not engage without pressure (freon in the system). Sadly you're going to have to test for leaks which includes filling it up with freon and dye to see where your leak is.

When I have a leak I just replace the whole system as I don't want to waist time or money on filling it up with freon. Grant it I do my own work so it doesn't cost me much more to just change out the old parts. When I have a customer with a 15+ year old car I just replace condenser, compressor, schrader valves and all gaskets. When I did mine 4 years ago I spent around $400 for everything and it's been fine since.

The right thing to do though is fill with dye and find the leak and replace the part
