Matt Farah Takes on the Dinan-Tuned E34 M5

E34

The E39 BMW M5 is perhaps my favorite BMW of them all. The car looks good from every single angle, and it has a properly sorted V8 attached to a manual gearbox. It’s one of my dream cars. However, it wouldn’t be the breathtaking performance bargain of the century without the car that came before it: the E34 M5.

Using a high-revving inline-six cylinder engine, the E34 M5 was the performance sedan to end all performance sedans, back in its day. And when the car came out, Dinan had to have their way with it. That meant new springs and sway bars, better brakes, better gearing, and turning the lovely and smooth six cylinder into a stroker motor. In other words, it became an absolute beast of a car.

In The Smoking Tire’s latest “One Take” video, Matt Farah takes on not only Angeles Crest Highway, which is a highly technical section of road, but also the Dinan-tuned E34 M5 that supposedly made 390 horsepower when it left the workshop. Let’s see how they got on.
