Is Fuel Cell Tech In BMW’s Near Future?

BMW has been tickling around with the idea of fuel-cell cars for quite some time now. That technology appears to be closer with more leaked photos of a new BMW fuel cell car. The renderings, which look very in tune with BMW’s current styling direction, show a smaller tear-drop shaped coupe aimed at max efficiency. This comes right on the heels of the i8 fuel cell concept.

Sure, it’s not a looker like the E9, but such is the way with having to meet new MPG standards across company lines. Please allow me to deviate from popular opinion here and say that from the back angle, it looks quite a bit like what a modern Honda Insight would look like.

Back on topic, there’s no word yet on what would power it, but conveniently, BMW now has a three cylinder engine that’s affixed to the i8’s belly. Speaking of the i8, it also had a fuel cell version, with bodywork modified a bit (a lot) from the original. Photos of that car are included in the gallery below.
