A Matter of Taste: F10 M5 Versus E63 AMG S

As long as both BMW and Mercedes-Benz exist, the two brands will be compared against each other. They’re both sporty luxury cars from Germany that have similar price points, so they’re natural cross-shoppers, and even more natural opponents. In this case, Vehicle Virgins brings the F10 BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S together in the video below.

Flat-out, it’s easy to see that this reviewer loves both of the cars. They both do what they’re intended to do. Both weigh well more than two tons, both have massive V8s with turbos, both are freakin’ fast, and both offer a level of daily drivability and comfort. But, each has a slightly different feel and little advantages. For example, the AMG uses 4-Matic for all-wheel drive, while the M5 is rear-wheel drive.

Toward the end of the video, this presenter calls the AMG perfect as a daily ride with enough fun to make you smile. He says it’s extremely comfortable and that the exhaust sounds magnificent. He loves the smooth-box styling as opposed to the Beluga whale-like body of the M5. And he’s pleased with how well the car goes. It’s a nice balance between comfort and sport, without either one sticking out more than the other. He doesn’t find that to be the case with the M5.

According to Mr. VV, the M5 feels like a sports car that can also carry passengers, thanks to its extra two doors. Despite the fact that his ears aren’t tickled, he explains that the M5’s dual-clutch makes for instant shifting. He says the seating position feels much more hunkered down for darting around. And that the M5 just feels more raw overall. For that, he chooses the BMW as the winner, despite slobbering all over the  E63 for most of the video.

Speaking to the honest, unbiased M5 owners who have also driven an E-Class AMG: what were the differences you noticed? Did you feel a significant rift between the two? Let us know your opinions.
