California Coastal Range Rallying in a Vintage BMW 2002

Check out this gorgeously shot and edited composite film from the Driving While Awesome! Coastal Range Rally

The music selection for this video could not be any more perfect. “Lost Weekend” by The So So Glos is a fantastically upbeat and fast-paced Cal-culture tune. And it sounds just right with views of the Coastal Range flying by. While the band was formed in New York, the song simply reminds us of Bay Area beach punk. That really comes across in the editing and videography behind this short film. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the car playing a major role is a gorgeous, red, square-tail 2002.

Shot from the perspective of two friends taking on the 2017 Coastal Range Rally, this short film is one of our new favorites. You can’t watch it and not be happy. If you haven’t heard of it, Driving While Awesome! is a twice-weekly podcast out of Santa Cruz, California. They also host the road rally, which spans the spine of California from Carmel to Ventura. It’s open to cars that have a je ne sais quoi attribute they like to call “Sense of Occasion.” There are no marque specifications or year ranges to abide by, just a spirit of automotive adoration and friendliness.

The video is only a fraction of what it was like to spend three days on the road with this crew. It really needs to be experienced to be believed. But it’s a start. The little red Bimmer was really put through its paces. It retaliated by rejecting a couple spark plugs, but was an absolute trooper otherwise. While I attended the event in a Porsche, the 2002 contingent really surprised and inspired many of us. Hopefully they’ll be back for more next year, and if your Bimmer is up for the journey, think about signing up yourself.
