Celebrate Success Right: BMW M2-Based Concept Calls Back to 2002 Turbo

The 2002 was quite possibly BMW’s most important car. It set the world up for 3-Series domination by showing how great sport sedans and sport coupes based on sedans could be. The first 02-Series car was the 1600-2 (1602), which came out in 1966. So to celebrate 50 years of success and evolution, BMW debuted the 2002 Hommage Concept at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. (This comes only a short time after celebrating the company’s 100th anniversary, and the 50th anniversary of BMW in Italy.)

The concept is quite obviously based on the current BMW M2, which is quite a fantastic little coupe, so the pairing works. The 2002 Turbo Hommage has quite a few more aggressive lines, scoops, and cuts to it, but there are some subtleties that call back to the original car. The overhanging nose, the beltline, the rear fin, the old single-headlight set up, the wider wheel arches, and the light brow are all marks of the past.

Of course, like all of BMW’s Hommage Concepts, this is purely for looks and hoopla, and not for production. But it’s nice to look at anyway. 2002 forever!
