Commercial Break: BMW M Performance Steering Wheel

That stretch of road in town where all the tuners come out to play– car guys and girls know where to find it and which cars frequent the spot. Some hoods are popped and people gather ‘round to see what the other guy brought to show off. Engine swaps, intakes, headers, and  dubious custom modifications can be found at the local scene. You’ll almost be guaranteed to find some accessory that will leave you scratching your head in wonderment asking, “what in the hell were they thinking…?” For a long while I thought the BMW M Performance Steering wheel would be an accessory that, if I ever saw, would induce one of those existential moments of crisis and I would break down at its sight and shout, “Why?!”

They aren’t cheap. MSRP is between $800 to $1653!

I have never actually seen one in the flesh so today I looked them up for our 5Series commercial break. The video is well produced. The camera that’s dead-center must have made things difficult for Tim Schrick to drive, so kudos for him working past it.

I didn’t know the wheel had different modes. The product does such a good job of showing off BMW branding with an “Efficient Dynamics” mode that helps the driver be as green as they can.

Racing stuff is pretty cool as well with a lap timer that can also be broken down into a sector timer so a driver can fine tune their car for a racetrack. But if you’re seriously racing at a track, you probably have some form of data logger that already does that for you…

The dragstrip timing lights are my favorite. The LED’s move from red to green and will break down your quarter mile effort with all the data a driver wants, including a start reaction time. But if you actually want to drag, you should be at a strip, and those places log that data for you already…

Post your thoughts in the comments below. Would you pick one of these up?

All said I’m still not sold. Tires or a trick steering wheel? I know which I would pick but now, if I do see one of these at a local hangout or track, I probably won’t lose my mind. Probably.
