New M5

It’s only a few more days before we see the new M5.

BMW has announced that they are finally ready to show us the new M5. After much waiting and speculation, a teaser video shows us most of what we can expect from the new M-car ahead of its official reveal on August 21st.

After months of spy shots and testing, we were finally able to see a brief shot of the aggressive front bumper in BMW’s short teaser video, as well as on the cover art for the next Need For Speed game, “Need For Speed: Payback.”

BMW posted the video on their official Facebook page. The post also teased BMW’s new performance-focused all wheel drive system, M xDrive. That system will debut on the new M5.

All wheel drive is a point of contention among many M car fans. It’s a jarring break from tradition for BMW. While we’re excited to see what this new M5 can do with M xDrive, we also mourn the loss of the RWD super sports sedan.

Unfortunately, the ongoing horsepower wars mean that a rear-wheel-drive only M5 would be very difficult for many average drivers to handle. We personally miss the days of more balanced M cars that rewarded skilled drivers.

Horsepower figures for the new car are currently unavailable, but it’s clear from previous statements from BMW that power will be substantially more than the previous model.

The new M5 gets a twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 with upgraded cooling, lubrication, and fuel injection. A lighter exhaust is paired with new turbochargers to boost power substantially over the standard V8 found in non-M version of the G30 5 Series.

We’re optimistic about the future of the M5 here at 5Series.net. We hope that BMW can do their best to preserve the driving dynamics that have made the M5 badge legendary while continuing to push the envelope of performance and technological development.
