2020 BMW M5 Competition + LA Auto Show

2020 M5 Competition is a carbon-fiber anointed beauty at rest… and a 4.4-liter V8-powered beast at play.

The M5 Competition is a lot like Superman. Bear with us on this. On the outside, the BMW sedan is Clark Kent. Or, an upgraded Kent, clad in an immaculate, crisp, and sophisticated exterior. But underneath lies the heart of the M5 Competition, maybe one the baddest rides on the road. And just as Kent tears off his specs, reveals the “S” on his chest, and unleashes superpower; so has BMW with the 2020 M5 Competition.

We got a chance to see the new born-to-perform M5 in the Competition package at the L.A. Auto Show. BMW brought a smoke-show lineup, with some true standouts such as the M8 Gran Coupe and Gran Coupe First Edition, M2 C3, the BMW-powered Karma Revero, and more.

Exterior

Impossible to miss in yellow, the 2020 M5 Competition looked fantastic. And also like it was possibly lying in wait.

 LA Auto Show

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing the M5 Competition in action, you know that this is an insane ride that adds even more to the top-level  M5. Powered by a twin-turbo 4.4L V8, it cranks out 627 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Power is perfectly handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. It hits 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and has a top speed of 155 mph.

Yeah, all of this in a mid-sized sedan.

Although we do think the addition of carbon fiber was brilliant. It nicely enhances the performance-inspired style of the M5.

Carbon fiber is on the rear spoiler, roof, mirrors, even the door handles. LED lighting is another detail that looks incredible.

Bearing the M5 Competition badges throughout, the range-topping model absolutely looks as fierce as it handles.

Interior

Inside there is more carbon fiber, and badging on the door sill and seats. It comes loaded with a leather steering wheel, power windows, tilt steering, telescope steering, and more–all standard.

Running on 20-inch lightweight forged alloys in the front and rear, they too bear the mark of M Competition.

When it comes to pure, purpose-built performance with a truly animalistic edge, we think it doesn’t get any better than this. Now if only they had a chance to turn it on, rev that throaty exhaust note, and open it up. Almost faster than a speeding bullet.
