BMW M2 Goes Head-to-Head With Camaro 1LE

Can BMW’s Littlest M Beat American Shock and Awe?

We all know the BMW M2 is one of the best BMWs you can buy today. Once you get behind the wheel, it reminds you what BMWs should drive like, and you immediately want one. But there’s a lot of good sports car competition out there, even from the Americans. One of the best is the 1LE Camaro. Does it have enough “Shock and Awe” to upset the M2 in a head-to-head battle?

The folks over at Motor Trend aimed to find out in their latest “Head 2 Head video. Showing up to the fight against the M2 is the 1LE Camaro, but not the V8 1LE Camaro. That means it’s packing a V6, and doesn’t have magnetic shocks or a computer-controlled rear differential. It does, however, have better tires, and the excellent performance characteristics associated with GM’s Alpha platform.

Around a race track it’s no surprise that the BMW is the winner. It has more horsepower, and more usable torque more of the time. It’s also a smaller car, making it more nimble, and giving the driver more confidence.

So why even bother with the new Camaro? Because it’s really good.

The V6 engine has a dual-mode exhaust that lets it roar in a uniquely-V6 way under throttle. Chevrolet doesn’t need to pipe fake engine noise into the cabin from the stereo in order to make the car sound good. It’s also going to be a less-expensive option than the BMW.

Still, if you wanted a truly awesome competitor for the M2, it’d be the V8 1LE. However, at the end of the day, the little Bimmer might still end up taking home that trophy too, like it does in this head-to-head match-up.
