BMW F10 5-Series Retrospective

With the G30 on the Horizon, BMW Shares a Retrospective on the Outgoing F10 5-Series

BMW continues producing excellent retrospective videos about past models. This latest one about the F10 is no different. Focusing on the outgoing F10 chassis, it’s a fitting send-off for a successful model.

Quite a departure from the somewhat radical, polarizing styling of the E60, the F10 is far more subdued. As is traditional, it looks like a classier, more adult version of the contemporary 3-Series. Yet it retains a unique character all its own. Despite its conservative style, the F10 was not without controversy. The premiere of the GT body style upset some purists, who preferred the Touring model that we never received in the U.S.

The interior, while remaining driver-focused, is still very passenger-friendly, in the vein of the preceding E60 model. But special attention is paid throughout the F10’s interior to materials. The result is a high-class feel that’s sure to impress.

A varied lineup of engines finds their way into the F10. From turbocharged four-cylinders to N/A V8s, diesels, and hybrid powerplants — and that’s just in the U.S. As per usual with the 5-Series, the F10 is capable of being the right car for a great many people.

Special attention is paid to chassis tuning, with a double-wishbone front suspension that makes more extensive use of aluminum than ever before. In addition, electronic steering makes its debut. It may have alienated purists, but continues to win fans for its light and easy character. Despite the fact that the F10 is the largest, heaviest 5-Series to date, it still feels like a light, nimble sport sedan in the grand tradition of BMW.

With G30 deliveries beginning any time now, it’s a great time to take one more look at the F10. Don’t you think?
