BMW 750 iL Can Still Compete With Super Sedans of Today

BMW 750 iL is an agile super sedan from the ’90s that was propelled by a 5.4-liter 326 HP BMW V12 powerplant.

Back in May, we discussed a BMW Group Classic video that revisited the iconic BMW 3.0 CSL Batmobile. Well, our old friend and BMW Group Classic Museum Employee, Mark is back with a new video, and this time he’s joined by The Head of Marketing & PR BMW Group Classic, Christoph Gontard. The duo offers a quick look at one of the boldest BMW models from the late 90s- the 750 iL.

For the uninitiated, the letter L in this car’s nomenclature stands for long wheelbase. Mark and Christoph Show us around three different versions of the BMW 750 iL. BMW 750 iL was almost 5.5 inches longer than the standard version, as it was designed to be chauffeur-driven. The luxury sedan was propelled by a 5.4 liter BMW motor. The V12 powerplant produced 326 HP of maximum power and 361 lb-ft of peak torque in its factory tune.

“In our opinion, it is one of the most solid cars that we have here at classic,” said Gontard. He further added, “This BMW 750 iL is actually a chauffeurs car, but since it’s very agile and very luxurious in the entire interior, we did discuss before that there might have been a huge argument between the chauffeur and the executive about who’s going to be driving today.”

The car’s top speed was limited to 155 MPH, and even though it weighed well over 4500 lbs, the BMW 750 iL could accelerate to 60 MPH from a complete standstill in just 6.5 seconds. In addition to the standard 750 iL, the video also features two very special versions of the lauded BMW super sedan.

The first model was designed by famous German film director and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. “this is a beauty in Canyon Red and Nepal Silver Metallic. It’s a BMW 38 750 iL Series designed by Karl Lagerfeld,” said Mark. He further added, ”In fact, it was a cooperation between BMW Individual, Mr. Lagerfeld, and the hotel Four Seasons at Hamburg.”

Saving the best for the last, the duo offers a quick look at the spy-spec BMW 750 iL that had the honor of serving British special agent James Bond in the film- Tomorrow Never Dies. In addition to a host of luxury features and creature comforts, this spy car also comes fully equipped with roof-mounted rocket launchers.
