BMW Fireworks Spark Twitter Back & Forth With Audi

BMW versus Audi on Twitter.

Audi’s Twitter account couldn’t help but think those rings behind the BMW M4 in the above photo look familiar.

It’s a long-standing rivalry and one that brings the occasional comical moment or perfect put down. Moto1 caught the brief exchange between the brands on Twitter, and once you see the Audi-esque rings in the background of the photo, they can’t be unseen. Audi quickly pointed that out.

It’s a hard sell to call it a Twitter feud as both BMW and Audi know that witty digs are great for fun and publicity, but a knock down drag out feud is the kind of thing neither could ultimately win. The two German luxury brands slinging mud at each other would only be good for Mercedes. It appears BMW got the last word in here though, and in the form of some sharp wit.

These kinds of exchanges in the past have generally been a little more expensive. Twitter user Daniel Kim reminded everyone in the thread about the billboard spat a while ago that started with Audi using a picture of their A4 model with the words, “Your move BMW.” BMW promptly replied with a billboard across the street for a local dealer and the caption, “Checkmate.”

Audi then pulled a smart social media engagement move by asking their Facebook followers to come up with a photoshop reply. They came up with Audi’s mid-engined supercar the R8 and the caption, “Your pawn is no match for our king.” BMW fans went to the next level with this wonderful submission that added a blimp to the mix sporting a picture of BMW’s F1 car.

Of course, the fireworks picture is a little more subtle than taking out billboards and name-checking each other. It probably was not deliberate but we’re glad it happened. We prefer BMW but do appreciate that Audi keeps trying. Maybe one day they’ll get to drop the final smackdown.

His obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars.
