It's a pretty common issue on the LCI 5 series. Mine has had this issue for nearly a year now. Every once in a while the indicator doesn't light up, but the orange lights always stay on. In the spring I'll take it out and fix the wires. When I checked, a brand new OEM Msport shifter is $200 from ECS tuning.

I just noticed this morning that the lights on my shifter were not illuminating when the car is on. None of them light up no matter what position the shifter is in. I'm sure they didn't all burn out at the same time. Has anyone else experienced this before? Everything else seems fine with the car.
Could this possibly be a fuse that went out? Where should I look?

Bumping this thread back up as I’m having this issue. No power at all to the shifter and sport mode button, and the car won’t shift out of park or engage sport mode. No lights on the dash indicating anything is wrong otherwise. I have an ‘09 535i.
Anyone else have this issue? Thinking of replacing the entire shifter assembly since this is a common problem, but wanted to crowd source any other ideas before spending the money to do that.

I checked that (I’ve actually already removed the shifter) and didn’t notice any broken wires on the ribbon cables or main connection that supplies power. My assumption was that the main connection to the shifter may have been broken since power to both the shifter and sport mode button was out, but no luck.
My last ditch effort might be to try to track down the fuse just to confirm it’s not that. If anyone knows which fuse that is, help there would be appreciated. If it’s not that, I’m gonna throw a new shifter at it and hope that fixes it.

Found the issue. After searching one by one, I found a blown 10 amp fuse in the trunk fuse box that controls:
Selector lever
Gear indicator lighting
Eject box
TCU (telematics control unit)
Compensator (mobile phone)
Fan, spare wheel well
Electronic night vision module
I had an issue with my MULF2 and replaced it, along with the plug that goes into it, after discovering water had completely ruined all of it. The best I can figure was that when replacing the plug and soldering it on, it grounded out and caused the fuse to blow. Replacing that fuse fixed the gear shifter, and now the MULF2 is functioning properly again.
