Those, my friend, are some of those great questions that are many times asked, but never answered .

yeah very good question .

In later models using DDE 7.0 (not sure which models have this) the parameters are changed.
And an electric motor controls the shutters beside a solenoid.
The shutter then helps more to reduce drag (or CW).

Radiator shutter

The DDE control unit opens or closes the radiator blind depending on the operating range.

The radiator blind opens at:

Coolant temperature > 100 °C (closes at < 95 °C)
Speed > 180 kph (closes at < 140 km/h)
Speed request for electric fan > 1600 rpm (closes at < 1380 rpm)
Speed request for electric fan by air conditioning system > 1600 rpm
(closes at < 1050 rpm)
Winter safety function:
-Window wipers ON and
-Speed between 65 kph and 125 kph and
-Ambient temperature between -8 °C and 2 °C
Electric fan after-run
With automatic transmission: transmission temperature > 115 °C (closes at < 110 °C)

During trailer towing, the radiator blind is permanently opened if the trailer is connected to the trailer module.

The winter safety function prevents the radiator blind from freezing shut while the vehicle is being driven in wet or snowy conditions.

Ok one step further. I have bought the shutters and have connected them to try it out.
After switching one the engine the shutters lock, so it seems to work, no coding required.
Didn't have enough time to try out if they are released after the engine reaches 90°C but I am confident they are. Going to order some missing parts and then mount them.
Think they are a cool feature and help in reducing drag and bringing the engine faster to normal operating tempurature.

Thank in advance

You have to installed and take 2 cables from solenoid to DDE. Each car is different (depending engine), for this you should look for what pin number you should connect.

thanks for the reply :-)
I have a 530i n52 engine. From what i have reade in this thread, i alla supposed to connect the cables to pin 31 on the dde/dme (sits under the microfilter on passenger side?) and then fuse 4 which is where? In the boot? Or the same place as the dde?
Do you by chance have any pictures I can use as a guide?
Regards
