There are specific codes for each cylinder misfire. I do not know them off the top of my head, but if you search google with your codes, you'll find the issue.

If your codes point to a misfire, first, change spark plugs (if they are old), and when putting the coils back on, move the coil that is misfiring according to your codes to a different cylinder, clear your codes, wait for misfire code to come back, see if the code followed the coil to a different cylinder, if it follows the coil, you know its the coil.

On the E60 N54, there is no CBS interval for spark plug service.

Service and Warranty Information booklet
2010 5-series, Page 10

Spark plugs (not shown in CBS)
Maintenance work:
Replace spark plugs at the following intervals:
– 128i, 328i, 328i xDrive, 528i, 528i xDrive, 550i,550i Gran Turismo, 6 Series: 60,000 miles or at every 4th engine oil service.
– 135i, 335i, 535i, 535i xDrive, 535i xDrive Sports Wagon: 45,000 miles or at every 3rd engine oil service.
Is there a service interval reset procedure still needed via INPA or other tools?

Thanks bud for the thread it really helped me save some time. I got to the plugs in 15 minutes and then an hour and a half later the stupid coil packs finally came off. I swear my hands hurt like a mutha those things were SOOO suction cupped on the plugs. I couldn't believe how hard they were to come off. I didn't want to damage them. I literally had to put a towel on them and pull back with all my might while i tried to wiggle them out at the same time. About 43k on the car now and we bought it with 30K miles so i would imagine this was the first time they were done. Thanks again!

Thank you to the OP for this info! I just did this on my 2008 535xi and it went without a hitch. There were 4 screws on the cover as chrious pointed out.
Background...
Car is just about to turn 70k on the clock, plugs changed out by dealer at around 32k due to rough idle, original iginition coils. Got all parts through eeuroparts.com (who btw has ignition coils for $26) and decided I might as well change all plugs and coils. Car has a Cobb tune and consistently was throwing a misfire code in cylinder #4 and was just going to do that one, but the day I placed my order, I was also getting a misfire in cylinder #2 so I just replaced them all w/o even testing. Car is running like a top, idling smooth as can be, acceleration is smooth, constant, no hesitations at all...car feels like brand new. Thank you again to the OP as well as 5series.net for being who you all are...awesome community and can always count on this site for the help I need! You all rock!

I have a 08 535 and it has four allen bolts for the top cover too.

Did have a question on the coil packs. They were so stuck in there that It was a real tug to get them out. Has anyone put any die-electric grease inside to help the process the next time?

Also my number two plug was the only one with some carbon on the tips. Do I need a new coil? it runs smoothly though.

Thanks to the OP! I just replaced my spark plugs and coils that I bought from eeuroparts.com which BTW it was shipped pretty quick. This DIY helped me and it only took me an hour from start to finish now my 535i runs smooth without any lag.
