Welcome Aboard, hoow?

Both of these cars are nice, in fact I've owned both of these cars (S600, S55 and 545i).
However in choosing the car it all depends on, are you a driven kind of guy or a passenger kind of guy thing. In my case, I've prefer to use S class as my daily car due to more legroom in the passenger seat since I've a chaufer to drive me around to the office. However, when I choose to drive myself, I much prefer to drive a 5 series due to the size and more fun factors than the S.

However, IMHO, if you could increase your budget a little bit, I highly recommend you to purchase the Masserati Quattroporte, I've purchased one, It's have fun factors offer of the 5 Series and extra space of the S.? Good luck in choosing your car, whatever you choose,? both of these cars are great.?

How does the Quattroporte compare with the 545i?

I agree with most of what's been said. IMO I think the new Mercedes CLS500 is a more apropriate car to be compared against the E60. Though I have liked the CLS500 in pics, I did not like it when I saw it in the flesh. I'm sure it's a very good car...but I'm still happy with my selection!

If I was in the US then I'd be considering A BMW 545i, or perhaps an Audi A6 4.2 V8, or even a MB. Nothing but a V8

However I'm in the UK, and therefore the car price and fule cost means I'm getting a 530. And as it's a company car, and paying tax based on fuel use, it's the diesel 530d.

My next car will probably be a tossup between a 535d or the M5. Depending on whether it's a company car or not.

I'd prefer the M5 over an S class MB. MB = old man's car!

I have an S Class - and my wife just got the E60 about 3 months ago - everytime i cross over from her E60 back to my MB - the steering feels alot heavier & less responsive esp at low speeds - this is all thank's to the wonderful Active Steering on the E60

The S is still more comfy on rough roads - the E60 is stiffer - the E60 is actually NOT that small a car - esp when comparing to the W211 E Class - the S however, still drives more like a big car - ie: not spirited or sporty - just stable & every ride is a stately progression from point A to B

If you are a knobs & buttons person than the MB's interior is more for you - & you may find the E60's typically spartan by MB standards.

My wife's previous car was the C class W203 - having driven the S & the E60 - this applies to both of us & i believe i speak for her - after this first BMW purchase - we will certainly consider future buys from BMW.

S class + E60 with Singapore COE = a heap of money. Must make you sick when you see what the yanks pay for their car/petrol.

I'm sure the Singapore govt must have shares in Toyota.

Welcome to the forum, hoow. For about $65,000 you can get a BMW 545 with 325 hp plus Sport Package that will handle better and run circles around the $76,000 Mercedes S class with 275 hp. Where's the dilemma?

IMO the 3 series is too small. M5, but honestly the E60 545i is a kickass car. I drove an E39 M5 right before the E60. I found the ride much harder, the cornering harder, the exhaust growl annoying. The acceleration surge and torque was great, but not enough to justify buying a dated car.

Now E60 M5. Who knows. I'd have to drive one first.

M3 and M5 are built totally for the equivalent of street racing/handling.

The new E60 has more comfort and will handle when you need it to.

With the new M5(V10) and the new M3(V8), we'll have to see since there will also be new handling technology involved.

As far as Merc vs. BMW, if you define yourself as a "driver" then you've answered your own question. 545i is the way to go. If not, get the Merc.
