Winter Shock Inspection and Repair Tips:

Shock absorbers and struts commonly fail more in the winter months for several reasons.

1) The winter season, especially in the northern states are known for freezing temperatures and often high humidity. Under these conditions roads begin to heave, become increasing rough, and give your suspension and shocks a serious work out.

2) The piston shaft of the shock absorber, which goes up and down when encountering bumps, runs through a seal in the shock absorbers body. This seal becomes the focus of potential shock absorber failure during the winter months. For one, the viscosity of the oil within the shock absorber gets thicker when it's cold outside. The thicker oil puts more stress on the shock shaft seal, and after tens of thousands of miles of shock compression (shaft going up and down) the shaft seal eventually wears out.

Overtime the dust boot and shock cap (which covers the shock shaft) begin to deteriorate, compromising the shock shaft and seal areas. The shock seal is then exposed to road debris and salt laden moisture, splashing up into the wheel well area. Shortly following this type of exposure, the shaft seal becomes damaged and begins to leak out oil from within the shock, depleting the oil that should be used for absorbing or dampening bumps in the road. This scenario is generally why shocks fail more often during winter. When shock absorbers don't dampen properly, vehicle control is affected, which is especially important for safe driving during the harsh slippery winter months.

If at present, you would classify your car as 'bouncy' or has a loose 'Teeter-Totter' feeling when hitting bumps, you may with to consider replacing your shock absorbers before the dead of winter when the road surface conditions are at their worst.

How to inspect your shocks for oil seepage or leaks:

Inspect the area where the shock shaft enters the shock body. This is where the seal is located. If your shock seal is beginning to leak, you will have a oily residue in this area. It's also important to check the condition of your dust boot or sleeve, as these components protect the shock shaft and seal from road grit that splashes up into the wheel well area. If your dust boot or sleeve is ripped or missing anticipate and expect premature shock seal failure.
