In the past, when starting the car, pressure to the brake pedal would result in the pedal depressing as it normally does when the brakes are applied during driving. Recently, when starting the car, the brake pedal is firm and will not depress at all until after the car is started. Brakes seem to work normally while driving. Has anyone had this issue? Does this indicate a problem?

Its one of the following I'm pretty sure:

1. Brake booster
2. Master cylinder
3. Expansion tank
4. Vacuum hose

Below is the link to the document which explains how to change these parts. I recently experienced the same brake issue, but my car wouldn't stop as easily and I had to apply harder pressure to the brake pedal....pretty scary. Take it to a mechanic and let them tell you what exactly the problem is then if you're up to it you can change those parts yourself.

Good luck, and safe motoring.

Mine has done this since I bought it, but only after the car has been sitting for several hours. Less than that and the vacuum is still there and the pedal depresses normally. I assumed it was normal that the vacuum assist just goes away over time and don't worry about it.

With the MT, I don't have to push the brake during start very often anyway. Sometimes on inclines I have push it to keep the car from rolling because I don't set my parking brake very hard. Once I popped the handbrake cable off the lever and don't want to do that again.

maybe there is a bad check-valve on the vacuum line going to or mounted on the booster.

It's fine. I asked my SA when I first got the car.

Happened to me today. I attributed it to the fact that my car has sat in the garage all week (too much snow to drive).

I've only had my 08 535i since July 09 but it has been that way since day one. As soon as the car starts the brakes act normally. The car does usually sit a while between startups.

Sounds like a slow vacuum leak somewhere. The E90 has a SIB on this, but the E60 does not.

Example E90 SIB:
Additional Effort Required to Press Brake Pedal Prior to Engine Initial Start
