I just wonder if you ever encountered this issue:
I previously was able to open my car from quite a distance (30m or so) with my remote keys. Starting two weeks ago, I'm just able to open my car no more than 5m away; and this happens with both keys (which means it's not some kind of key discharge issue): any hints ?

I have noticed the same issue. I have found however that if you hold the button on the FOB down a little longer it will transmitt from a little farther away. Still it does not compare to the last car I had that would work from over 60' away.

I cannot tell you how happy I was to read your post, not that your having this problem, just that I'm not crazy. When I had my car in for it's last service/tire change, I ask the service dept to check my remotes as I too felt their effective distance had diminished. Actually, one key works better than the other, but both are not as good as they were when I got the car; anyway the dealer says they are within factory spec. I argued this and the service advisor seemed to think I was right. Anyway, they were supposed to check with BMWNA and get back to me, that was two weeks ago, but I know these remotes are not working properly. I find myself pressing the dam button several times to lock the doors, when I used just walk away and press the button 10 or 15 feet away with my back to the car, not anymore.

Please let me know if you get this resolved.

Actually I tested in real life and I can confirm Clarkson's "findings"...

Now, about the "how"...

I have noticed that the range on my remote seems to have diminished as well. Let us know what the dealer has to say about it. As far as the Clarkson trick, this does indeed work. I first heard about it in the early 90's. Uses your body as an antenna increasing range.

My only guess is this could be related to something interfering with the rear window as I pre-suppose the antenna lies within this rear (back) windows: any news from this ?

I had the same problem on my 550 and had my key replaced with a new one, as one key did work better than the other. Same thing. it really did not work any better than the old key, so took it in and they replaced the antenna for the remote. Voila, problem solved. Now I can unlock the car before I get to the garage.
The service advisor did tell me that the antenna was in the back.
