Brought the car in for the battery cable re-call and the dealer told me the Megatronic Sleeve has a slow leak and it will cost $1,110 to fix. The car was just in for the expensive 30K mile service, about 2 months ago, and there was no mention then of a problem. Is this a rip off and do I have to do it??? Or can I let it ride? Any advice would be appreciated.

Seems very conveniently timed for them. Demand to see where it's leaking from.

I would also get a second opinion from an indie shop before agreeing to anything from the dealer.

Yes, Probably true, all of the e60's seam to have this issue. Mine had to be done at 45k.

Sorry to hear CWP, but you are now on the wrong tread.

This is for F10 cars. I'm sure you'll find more experience in the E60 section.

There is a kit you can buy from an online ZF store where it comes with oil, pan with new gasket, bolts + mechatronic sleeve. I think the kit runs around $250-300. You can DIY it but if you are not mechanically inclined, find a good indy mechanic to do it for you. Should be around 2-3 hour job.

I guess I am lucky, I have replaced the tranny fliud and filter not long ago and there was no leaking from mine (knocks vigorously on wood)

My 04 545 with 54,000 miles is in the shop getting it done today.
The dealer spotted mine when in for a recall as well.
They quoted me around $900.

I lived with it for a while and finally decided to do it.
I called Aamco for the hell of it and they estimated $620.

I took it to my local indy shop and he's doing it for $500.
(includes new pan/filter and fluid replcement.)

Just had mine replaced by Wislow BMW in Colorado Springs, CO for $515. My car is at 110k miles so I was not entirely shocked it was leaking by this point. It had been leaking for a year or so and I was starting to notice some strange behavior from the transmission so I had the repair done. I am not sure if the dealers use a uniform pricing policy, but it may be negotiable?

This is another of those very common e60 issues. Had mine done under original warranty a couple of years ago at about 45K miles. ... so I can't tell you what the cost might have been. That said, $1000 seems a bit steep for less than $100 in parts. They reuse any transmission oil they remove. Even if they have the b_lls to charge $200/hr for labor that's 4+ hours labor. Something isn't Kosher.

Can you post your bill by any chance? It might help others fight their case of being ripped off
